In 1214 during the Albgensian crusades Simon de Montfort laid siege to the castle. ![]() His army found shelter in the central tower of the castle, however the family of Beynac retook the citadel in 1199 the same year Richard the Lionheat died. However, the new king of England, Richard the the Lionheart seized the castle in 1197 to severe all links with the Count of Toulouse. The marriage between Alienor d’Aquitaine and the future king of England, Henri Plantagenêt, saw Beynac, as of all Aquitaine, come under English, controlled by the Count of Toulouse, a vassal of the king of France. In 1050 Hélie de Beynac, the first known and recorded lord, installed the first fortified presence Castrum. With the cliff acting as a natural defense the castle was built up on the plateau and features double crenellated walls, double moats, one of which was a deepened natural ravine, and double barbican. We are located just a short drive from the Dordogne river and the famous 'Vallee des Cinq Chateaux' - the Valley of The Five Castles'. Car hire is available at all the major airports and in the nearby town of Sarlat. Brive airport, also one hour away, offers daily flights to and from London City Airportīy car, it takes about 8 hours to reach the Perigord Noir from the Eurotunnel, and 6 hours from Paris. There are direct flights from several UK airports to Bergerac with Ryanair and Flybe. We are two hours drive from the airports of Bordeaux and Toulouse, and one hour from Bergerac. Many of the local villages have street markets (you can find one every day), which are a great place to buy fresh local fruit, vegetables and cheeses. There is an excellent bakery, butcher and small organic supermarket all within 10 minute drive, and a hypermarket in Sarlat for stocking up on essentials. We are near the beautiful villages of Beynac and La Rocque Gageac and 15km from the historic market town of Sarlat. The chateau is situated in the heart of the Perigord Noir region of the Dordogne.
